(In my younger years) I was obsessed with the idea of playing exactly w hat’s written, by following to the letter every indication the composer left us. That started to feel like a dead end. With Bach you have few indications beyond the notes. You have to know how to interpret certain patterns, be familiar with the style and then make choices. At the time, this opened a new door for me. I discovered that Bach gives me freedom like no other music. It’s been incredibly liberating and this was the beginning of my long and gratifying journey with him.
